Monday 28th May the seniors travelled to Eaton for a friendly match led by Brian Stone last years captain. Eaton always a difficult venue to avoid defeat turned up a lovely surprise. I am not sure of the content of Brians team talk “i need to enquire ” but the team came away with a magnificent victory 5-1. Victory.
Well done Brian and the team and many thanks to Brian for deputising in
my absence. Monday 28th May the reason for my absence at Eaton, Roger Human and
myself are representing Barnham seniors at Thetford’s Centenary celebration, captains invitation day.
What a fantastic day, Thetford were terrific hosts, refreshments on arrival, teamed up with two super Thetford members Roger Squirell and Dick to form a four man team in a better/ball Stableford three scores to count on each hole. By now the temperatures were in the middle twenties. Golf bags loaded with plenty of liquid refreshment we were on our way teeing off the first a par three. There was already loads of banter and a fine time was being had by all.
The golf was not bad either. 12 pars between Roger Human and myself on the front nine, we both returned 19 points by the turn, a very satisfactory start. Our hosts were doing quite well also Dick 18 and Roger Squirell 16. I had not played this course for a while while my vice/captain had never played it. At the final count we had amassed 114 points a fair total, and my tally was 37, very satisfactory. A quick shower, and to the bar the site of those ice cool pints lined up on the bar, a wonderful sight, even better when i finally got the mug to my lips. Up the stairs to the Restaurant to be confronted by a superb buffet. Now fed and watered back down to the bar and to the scoreboard, currently in second place wow, but there are six more teams still on the course. Prize giving, and you have guessed it, our team runners up in a field of 80 the perfect end to a super day. Thank you Thetford.
